Doctor of Clinical Psychology

Does your child or adolescent have depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional behaviors, sleep problems, high functioning autism, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, emotional dysregulation, or anger issues? Our children mean everything to us. When they are in distress, we suffer, too. If your child or adolescent has emotional and/or behavioral problems, I can help.

My name is Dr. Connie Nickou. I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 25 years of experience practicing compassionate, scientifically-informed, and evidence-based psychotherapy with children, adolescents, and adults. I earned my Bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University and my Master’s degree and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the Graduate Institute of Professional Psychology at the University of Hartford. I completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. I believe that individuals have the capacity to use their unique talents and strengths to overcome a myriad of challenges, and with support, are able to live their lives to his or her fullest potential. While I also work with adults, the primary focus of my Practice is on children and adolescents.

Particular areas of interest and expertise for me include depression and bipolar disorder; anxiety disorders - including obsessive-compulsive, separation, and generalized anxiety disorders; acute and chronic stress; behavioral problems; high functioning autism; emotional dysregulation; social and interpersonal challenges; life transitions; and parent training and education. I am experienced in and have had comprehensive training and expertise in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Utilizing a variety of therapeutic approaches, including behavior therapy, play therapy, interpersonal therapy, and DBT and CBT, I teach children and adolescents tools, skills, and strategies to help them manage their emotions and behaviors more effectively. I help them untangle and heal their confusion, pain, and distress. I also guide, educate, and support parents in their efforts to cope with their children’s emotional and behavioral challenges.
